In the Snow

The phenomenon of snowfall on the island: It happens just once or twice every year where we live, and this week gave us a full five or six inches of snow blanketing our landscape.  That's our backyard in the photo.  It is beautiful. Today is still pretty chilly, and rain is predicted for next week, so we may be in for some dangerously icy roads.  We'll see.

Dan's been able to get to work, thanks to our good winter tires, but there are lots of cars on our street that have not attempted to leave their snowy bed in the driveway. There are also a few driveways with tire marks going back and forth and no further, which sadly mean attempts without success.  People do forget how to drive in snow here, as it does only happen a few times every winter.

The first couple of days we heard lots of spinning wheels, punching of pedals without effect, and sirens, too. Yikes.  Last year was even worse.  There's a very steep road near our street, and after quite a bit of snow turned icy last winter, it was quite slippery. Cars would still dare the incline, however, despite my hubby and brother-in-law warning them to turn around.  Weeeeee....Whoops.  Everyone was okay, but it was quite a pile up.

These snowy days have kept me indoors... and focused on packing.  We only have a bit of the office, the bedroom, and the kitchen to pack.  The rest is in boxes, piled in the living room to be shipped up island when the time comes. We are seven days away from the move! Incredible.

We don't have possession of our new house until the first weekend in March, so we'll have a month of one-room cabin living on Dan's parent's property. We will join them for meals (I will help cook), and Dan can carpool to work with his dad.  It's an economical and blessed arrangement.  We're very thankful.  Our worldly goods will be stored with us in the cabin and at Dan's aunt's place close by.  Everything is coming together.

These snowy, cloudy days tend to make us a bit lethargic, but we're staying awake with various inspirational things besides the packing...

Dan's Benelli Supernova shotgun arrived in the mail recently.  It's been a long awaited package.  He traded another gun in for this one, his dream gun.  It's quite intimidating, and very impressive.  I can't believe how many cool features it has!  Dan can't wait to take it out as soon as possible to get in some shooting.  He sure is good at it.  Really good.  He'll have a blast, literally, sometime soon, I hope.

I have begun a daily routine of Pilates, which is giving me a second wind in the afternoon as opposed to a gradual slump into drowsy evening hours...  So awesome. I enjoy the fact that Pilates were designed to strengthen the spine and core muscles as well as work on general toning.  They also get you into the habit of more effective breathing. It's great stuff!  Hoping this year I will be a more fit and vivacious self.
